Liverpool are in pursuit of Augsburg left-back Philipp Max, according to Sport.

The Spanish news outlet claims that Barcelona are also interested in the 25-year-old, who is valued at £17.9million.

It is understood that Max is wanted by some of the top clubs in Europe and Barcelona are finding it tricky to sign the former Bayern Munich and Schalke left-back due to the amount of competition.

OPINION

Andrew Robertson is one of the best left-backs in European football, but if the Scotsman was to get injured next season, Jurgen Klopp would find himself very short of options in that area after Alberto Moreno left Anfield last month. Max had a decent season for Bundesliga side Augsburg last term and could be a solid back-up option for Robertson. Last season, the German flyer made 34 appearances, scored four goals and supplied seven assists across all competitions. He is a very attack-minded left-back who has even been used on the left-wing by Augsburg in the German top-flight. According to stats by WhoScored, Max averaged two key passes and 1.9 successful crosses into the box per league appearance last term. Robertson, in comparison, averaged 1.4 key passes and 0.6 successful crosses. Max would be a superb second-choice left-back for Liverpool next season but it may be difficult to sign him due to the amount of interest this summer.
