McAteer hails Brewster

Jason McAteer has compared Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster to Kop legends Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler.

The teenager has been in eye-catching form this preseason, hitting three goals in two friendly appearances.

And McAteer has wasted not time in dishing out the compliments, drawing parallels between Brewster and the famous duo, who hit 529 goals between them for the Mersey giants.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “His [Brewster’s] progression is coming along nicely, it’s a great learning curve for him. He’s had that injury but he now looks like he’s fully fit and come back from it.

“You can see bits of Rushy in him, the way he runs, the way he closes people down. Also, bits of Robbie Fowler in his finishing.

“If he turns out half as good as those two, I’m sure we’ve got a real player on our hands!”

OPINION

This is high praise indeed from McAteer, but you can understand where he is coming from. Brewster may only be young, and he may not have made a competitive senior appearance for the Reds yet, but the way that he has handled himself this summer, and the faith that Jurgen Klopp seems willing to put in him, would suggest that he has a big, big future ahead of him. The golden boot he won at the U-17 World Cup was a good indication of the talent that Brewster has, and even though he has missed a year through injury, he looks to have picked up where he left off prior to that setback, and appears to be back on track for a big season at Anfield. You would expect him to nestle in behind Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi in the pecking order, but if he keeps on performing at the level he is currently, who’s to say how far he could go?
