OPINION
You have to feel sorry for any player who suffers a cruciate ligament injury. That kind of devastating blow can be enough to end careers, and even if it doesn’t, it can certainly be enough to put them on hold for an awfully long time. Time is something that Nathaniel Clyne could be a little short on. The 28-year-old isn’t getting any younger, and with Trent Alexander-Arnold firmly established as Liverpools first choice right-back, it’s hard to see how he will ever get regular game time at Anfield again. That’s why a move seemed like such a certainty this summer, and why the news that he is likely to be out for six months, as reported by the Telegraph, is so sad to hear. As well as his injury, the report suggests that a mooted move to Crystal Palace is definitely off the table now. That is bad news for both Liverpool and Clyne. From the club’s point of view, they now have to pay the wages of a player who they have all but deemed surplus to requirements. On the other, and more importantly, Clyne now faces a lengthy recovery battle, and has missed an opportunity to ensure game time at a top club before his career begins to enter its twilight.

Sorry for Clyne. But this is why we needed to be ruthless this summer and get rid of players like him and Lallana. New signing in 6 months then? ????? #LFC
