Liverpool fans react to Clyne

OPINION

As a general rule, it’s hard for a player over the age of 24 or so to make it at a club after they have been loaned out. If a talent reaches that stage of their career and they are deemed surplus enough to requirements to justify a temporary exit, you can usually bet that the next logical step is a permanent departure. And because of that logic, you wouldn’t have found many Liverpool fans who could force Nathaniel Clyne playing a role for their club in the coming season. After being sent out to Bournemouth in January, the 28-year-old looked for all the world as if he would be leaving Anfield this summer. But an early goal in the Reds’ first preseason friendly against Tranmere Rovers – the first strike in a 6-0 demolition, surely shows that he still has something to offer Liverpool. Obviously, Clyne won’t be scoring every week, but his performances for Bournemouth last season also show that he is an ideal option to act as defensive cover. 2.4 tackles and 1.9 clearances per match [Whoscored] show that he still has a lot to offer the Reds, and if he can be convinced to stay, it makes far more sense to keep a player of his talent instead of selling him and having to invest further down the line.
