Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has claimed that his old team have the ‘toughest task’ in Premier League history this season.

The Reds tasted Champions League glory last time out, but missed out on that elusive league title as they finished second to Manchester City despite a historic campaign.

Collymore isn’t convinced that will change this time round: “Liverpool are an exceptional team, manager, organisation and worthy European Champions,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“But to go 1 point better than this City team is the toughest task that any Premier League team will ever have had.”

OPINION

It’s hard to disagree with Collymore, here, to be honest. This Liverpool team is an unbelievable side, the best Reds team that many people will have experienced in their lifetime. However, they are going up against a behemoth in City who finished ahead of them last term and have strengthened their team more than Liverpool have this summer. Rodri is a top class central midfielder, the heir to Fernandinho and someone who will help Pep Guardiola’s side compete across multiple fronts this season. Jurgen Klopp, on the other hand, has only brought in two teenagers this summer. Having said that, the Reds have the benefit of having a number of quality players returning from injury, most notably Joe Gomez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster. They will be better, but so will City. The one thing that could help Liverpool finish top of the pile is if City go after the Champions League title which has proved as elusive to them as the Premier League has for the Merseyside giants.
