Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson raved about teammate Georginio Wijnaldum after the loss to Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Wijnaldum took to his personal Instagram after the loss to Man City on penalties and reflected on the fact he missed his spot-kick.

“Great team performance today, especially the 2nd half,” said the Dutch midfielder.

“But a very disappointing result and a penalty to forget very soon. Now move on and focus on the Premier League!”

Wijnaldum’s solemn post saw Henderson comment to rave about him as he simply said: “what a player” via his verified Instagram.

OPINION

Sometimes it’s painfully obvious why Jurgen Klopp has Henderson as his Liverpool captain. The England international clearly saw that Wijnaldum was feeling down in the dumps over missing his penalty in the shootout against Man City, and he needed building up. Liverpool were poor across the board in the first half of the clash with Pep Guardiola’s side and everyone upped their game in the second 45 minutes, including Wijnaldum. However, due to him being the one to miss the decisive penalty, his performance came under fire. In fact, several Liverpool fans on Twitter called for him to be sold on social media, feeling the Dutchman had cost them the game, and it was something that the midfielder didn’t deserve. Wijnaldum clearly was affected by his disappointing miss, and hopefully, it doesn’t hang over him like a bad hangover as the clash with Norwich City is under a week away. In his 2018/19 campaign, the 28-year-old proved himself to be a vital cog in Liverpool’s machine as he averaged a rating of 6.89 across his 35 league outings, and was never sloppy in possession as his pass completion rate was 91.1% (Source: WhoScored).
