Glen Johnson shared that he told Natalie Sawyer off-air that he was happy with the business Liverpool have done in the transfer window.

The former Reds defender was on talkSPORT with Jim White and Sawyer on transfer deadline day, and share that he spoke to Sawyer about how he liked that the Reds weren’t just buying any old rubbish.

Johnson went on to suggest that he thought the Reds hadn’t been overly active in the transfer market as they couldn’t get the targets they wanted so were opting to be patient.

“Yeah they’ll be a powerful outfit again, I was saying to Natalie off air, what I like about Liverpool’s window is they’ve not been desperate, not bought any old rubbish that won’t suit their needs,” said Johnson on talkSPORT (12:37pm, Thursday, August 8th).

“Of course you would have liked to have seen them sign a couple of marquee players, the fact they haven’t just gone for whatever, it’s the fact they didn’t get the targets they wanted and are just sitting patiently.”

OPINION

Liverpool have welcomed Sepp van der Berg, Harvey Elliott and Adrian to the club this summer, and none of them on paper look like being capable of improving the Reds’ first-team instantly. You feel Adrian will act as good cover for first-choice keeper Alisson, as he is Premier League proven having kept 35 clean sheets in 135 top-flight outings (Source: Premier League), and will likely get the nod to play in League Cup and FA Cup games. As for Elliott and van der Berg, the pair are both young so you can’t really predict how much playing time they will actually get for the first-team. However, while Liverpool haven’t been active, Johnson may have a point. There’s no point wasting money on signing players who won’t prove to be worthwhile and if the Reds can’t get the players they’ve set their sights on, Johnson is right to suggest patience is the right stance to take.
