Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to post a tongue-in-cheek prediction on Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title.

The Reds stormed their way to a 4-1 opening night victory over newly-promoted Norwich City, and as Virgil Van Dijk headed home the third just before the half hour mark, the Match of the Day host took to social media with a cheeky comment that suggested the title race was done and dusted.

Writing on his personal account, he said: “It’s Liverpool’s title now, surely?”

OPINION

It’s obvious that Lineker is joking here, but based on Liverpool’s performance on Friday night, who would bet against them in the title race? Norwich may be newly promoted, and they may have set up with a swashbuckling naivety that will sharp get beaten out of them at this level, but this was absolutely irresistible from the Reds. At times, the Canaries couldn’t lay a glove on them, and as the game progressed Jurgen Klopp’s men began to look more and more like a side capable of ripping anybody limb from limb. For Norwich, this was the cruelest of reintroductions to life in the top flight, but if there is any consolation to be taken from this opening night drubbing – and finding one isn’t easy – it will be that they won’t be the only side to fall foul of the Reds’ destructive persuasions this season. As for Klopp and his boys, what a way to get the ball rolling.
