Roma are still in contact with Dejan Lovren over a potential move away from Liverpool, according to Alfredo Pedulla.

The 6’2″ defender [Transfermarkt] was heavily lined with an exit from Anfield earlier in the summer, as reported by Football Insider, but remained a Kop player as of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

It is understood, however, that the Serie A side have been in touch with the Croatian over a potential transfer, and see him as one of three possible candidates, alongside Toby Alderweireld and Daniele Rugani.

The European transfer window remains open until the end of the month.

OPINION

There will be some Liverpool fans who argue that losing Lovren may not be the worst thing in the world. After all, between Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip, the Reds have a host of centre-back options who are all ahead of him in the pecking order, and short of acting as Mo Salah’s best mate, it doesn’t always seem immediately clear as to what purpose he serves at Anfield. At the end of the day though, losing players after the transfer window has shut is never preferable, and Lovren can still play his role for the Reds this season. Last term, even though he didn’t play all that often, the 30-year-old still managed 3.9 clearances and 1.2 tackles per game in the Premier League, as per Whoscored. Yes, he has the occasional mistake in him, but he also has the capacity to be an assured and reliable defensive option when required. At this stage it makes far more sense to keep him than to let him go, even if he only sticks around until January.
