Liverpool want to sign Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster before the summer transfer window slams shut next week, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Forster, 31, is among Liverpool’s targets as Jurgen Klopp aims to add more strength in depth to his goalkeeper options at Anfield.

Forster made just one Premier League appearance for Southampton last season and Sky Sports reported last month that the south coast club is willing to cash in on the six-time England international.

OPINION

It is not a shock to see that Southampton are ready to get rid of Forster. According to statistics website Spotrac, the ex-Celtic goalkeeper earns £70,000-a-week on his deal at St Mary’s and he’s hardly worth that when he isn’t playing or even getting on the bench. Forster played just once for Southampton’s first-team last season when he conceded three goals in a 3-0 defeat to West Ham in May. The 6ft 7 [transfermarkt] colossus has over 100 Premier League appearances to his name and six caps for England, so even though he is hardly playing at Southampton, he is still someone with a lot of experience that could be a good addition for Liverpool. However this deal seems unlikely to happen. Alission is clearly Klopp’s first-choice goalkeeper and he still has Simon Mignolet as his back-up option. Even for those who see Forster as a better option than Mignolet, it’s hardly worth the club’s money to sign someone who is just an upgrade on a back-up but still not good enough for the starting line-up. Klopp is better off settling for what he has already got in goals.
