Dejan Lovren has returned to training after the Liverpool centre-back missed the last few matches with an illness, according to football.london.

The news outlet claims that Lovren, 29, could be in contention to play in Liverpool’s Premier League showdown against Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday after images showed the Croatia international in training with his team-mates at Melwood.

Lovren is yet to make an appearance for Liverpool in the opening games of the new season and has been linked with a move away from the Merseyside club with transfer windows across Europe still open.

OPINION

Will Lovren remain as a Liverpool player by the time September comes around because the former Southampton and Lyon centre-back does not appear to be anywhere near Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans at the moment. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all ahead of him in the pecking order and that has led to Sky Sports reporting that Roma are interested in a season-long loan for the Croatia international. Roma have until September 2 to sign Lovren so there is no rush for Liverpool to get rid of him. Klopp may just be waiting until as late as possible to see if any of his other three centre-backs get injured or suspended before cashing in on the Croatian. If that’s the case then surely it would be best to not sell Lovren. If Klopp is worried about injuries and suspensions, then keep Lovren around as a fourth option. He was fourth-choice last season but still made 18 appearances across all competitions because Gomez and Matip both picked up injuries.
