Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker has suffered a calf injury in their opening day victory over Norwich City.

The Brazilian stopper pulled up after taking a goal kick midway through the first half during the 4-1 win and is now certain to miss the Reds’ European Super Cup game against Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp revealed after the game, as quoted by The Athletic journalist James Pearce on his personal Twitter account, that Alisson was set to spend a spell on the sidelines.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a great run of form in his first season in the Premier League, becoming an ever-present under Klopp and winning the Golden Glove award.

OPINION

Liverpool will no doubt be gutted by the news that their main stopper is set for a spell out of the first-team. The Brazilian international is a pivotal part of the Reds’ side, both in goalkeeping ability and the way he can keep possession under pressure with ease. Alisson has quickly become a fan favourite in between the sticks with his fearless approach on and off the ball. The former Roma stopper made 11 passes before being forced off the field last night, and only one of those was a long ball [Source: WhoScored] which highlights how Klopp wants his side to keep the ball down and create constant waves of pressure going forward – Alisson is key to that. His importance was highlighted even further when Adrian came on to the pitch to replace him, with the new signing not having the same ability on the ball, as highlighted by the number of stray passes he made. The Spaniard is nothing more than a decent replacement and Klopp will be hoping to have his main stopper back as quickly as possible.
