Liverpool starlet Rhian Brewster’s long-awaited first team debut is being earmarked for next Wednesday against MK Dons, according to journalist Paul Gorst.

The Reds correspondent revealed the news on a Liverpool Echo Q & A [19/09; 12:29], stating that the Carabao Cup fixture is viewed as the ideal opportunity for the 19-year-old to enter the fray.

Gorst explains that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has ‘lofty plans’ for the England youth international, but is taking his recovery from long-term injury slowly.

Roberto Firmino’s excellent form so far this season has meant the need for Brewster isn’t overly-exacerbating, but there are no concerns that the youngster will become the next Bobby Duncan.

OPINION

You wonder whether Divock Origi’s injury suffered against Newcastle United last time out in the Premier League will see Brewster enter the first team picture against Chelsea – off the substitute’s bench perhaps – but the MK Dons clash does indeed seem like the ideal game to give him his senior bow. You don’t really want him to have his first team debut come against a side like Napoli or Chelsea, with a third tier outfit much better suited to that task. As for Klopp’s lofty plans, that’s no surprise given how prolific Brewster has been at every level moving up towards the first team. He has excelled at all ages for both England and his club sides, and has been earmarked for first team success for a long time now. After Duncan leaving for Fiorentina in controversial fashion this summer, there are understandable concerns that Brewster will become equally frustrated with his lack of first team opportunities. However, it doesn’t seem like that’s a realistic possibility at the moment.
