Mick McCarthy has claimed that Liverpool and Manchester City have full-backs in their squads that are worth a combined £500million.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson are widely seen as the best full-back pairing in the Premier League while Manchester City also boast a lot of good talent in that area of the squad in Kyle Walker, Joao Cancelo, Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

It is clear that Liverpool have the best options in that area and McCarthy reckons that the quality of those players helps the Premier League title rivals to play in an extremely aggressive manner.

“The most aggressive teams in Premier League are Manchester City and Liverpool in terms of high press. You try and get through that and they’ll take you down. That’s aggressive,” said the Ireland manager, as quoted by FourFourTwo.

“The fact they’ve got £500million worth of full-backs in their teams helps. They are the most aggressive teams in the league, without a doubt.”

OPINION

If these players are worth a combined £500million, then the bulk of that must be Alexander-Arnold and Robertson. The only Man City full-back who comes close to competing with the Liverpool duo is Walker, but even he is 29-years-old now and has been left out of the latest England squad. While it would be simplistic to think that Walker’s England career is over, the former Tottenham right-back is currently nowhere near as influential at the Eithad as Alexander-Arnold is at Anfield. Robertson is making a case to be the best left-back in the world. The Scotland international is without doubt the best in his position in English football and while there will no doubt be those who disagree, the ex-Hull left-back is someone who is bound to get into the team of the year come the winter. Liverpool’s full-backs are the most exciting part of the team for a lot of people. Even though they are so good, they are still not talked about enough.
