Liverpool fans destroy Milner

OPINION

You will struggle to find a Liverpool fan who doesn’t feel greatly indebted to James Milner for his services to the club. Ever since he signed for the Reds from Manchester City on a free transfer back in 2015 he has been an immense presence for Jurgen Klopp’s men, often filling in in a number of positions and never giving anything less than 100%. He is in many ways, the model professional. So often, and infamously, regarded as “boring” as younger player, he has taken that tag and made it his own, with great humour and a tenacity that has made the mundanity of his dedication a real badge of honour. But in recent times, it has perhaps felt as if he is starting to fall off the pace a little. Last season he only managed 1.4 key passes per game in the Premier League, as per Whoscored, compared to 2.2 during his first season at Anfield. He also averaged 1.4 tackles per match, his lowest total since 2012/13, and his joint lowest total for a full Premier League season ever. And increasingly, it seems as if fans are beginning to feel as if his powers are on the wane. That was certainly the case against Napoli on Tuesday night, when a lacklustre display in a 2-0 defeat led to many Kopites giving the veteran a bit off a battering on Twitter.  It’s a shame to see, but maybe Milner is starting to approach the end of his career.
