Liverpool fans react to Can omission

|

OPINION

Emre Can must be kicking himself right about now. The German midfielder left Liverpool last summer on a free transfer for Juventus, presumably with the aim of winning more trophies on the continent. Instead, he has had to watch his old side lift a Champions League, while he has struggled to make an impact in Italy. And things went from bad to worse for him on Tuesday when it was announced that he would not be part of Juve’s squad for the Champions League this season, as reported by reliable journalist Simon Hughes. And it’s fair to say that most Reds fans took the news in very, very good humour. Their argument from the Kop has always been that Anfield is the pinnacle for any player, and that their club should be a final destination for players, rather than a stepping stone. Can didn’t see it that way, however, and their viewpoint will be that he is now paying the price. Last season was underwhelming from the 25-year-old, who managed just 0.7 key passes, 0.9 successful dribbles, and one interception per match in Serie A, as per Whoscored, and he is now suffering for his poor form. Whether he would have gotten into the current Liverpool side is a matter of some debate, but he was onto a good thing on Merseyside, and now it would appear that his career is pretty much back to square one.
