Robbie Fowler has suggested that the gap between Liverpool and Manchester United is so large now that he would be “gutted” to see his former club celebrating wildly if they win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Reds go into the game 15 points and 13 places above their bitter rivals, and Fowler has claimed that the game no longer possesses the same level of significance that it once did.

Writing in a column for the Mirror, he said: “As for Liverpool, well, if they do win, as the bookies overwhelmingly suggest they will, then I’d be gutted if I saw them celebrating wildly.”

OPINION

These are big, big words from Fowler, and a real measure of just how far the Red Devils have sunk in recent times. Some United supporters may see his comments as a sign of disrespect, but it’s really difficult to argue with him here. After eight games, that gap between the two sides – 15 points and 13 places – is simply ridiculous, and it just is happens that Man United worst spell in decades is coinciding with Liverpool’s best. Still, both sets of fans will be fired up for this one, and there is always the potential for an upset, but even with such sizeable bragging rights on the line, don’t be surprised to see Klopp’s men coast home in this one. Don’t rule out wild celebrations either.
