Paul Robinson has hailed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for his second goal in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Genk on Wednesday evening.

The English international doubled the Reds’ advantage in the second half with a sublime curled effort struck with the outside of his boot, and Robinson was eager to emphasise just how good the goal was.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “His second goal was phenomenal. If somebody like Harry Kane or Wayne Rooney had done something like that, we’d have been waxing lyrical about it for days.

“Such a difficult technique but he didn’t even think about it, the ball came to him and it’s just instinct.

“You see players doing it in training but to pull it off in a Champions League game, that was a goal of high, high quality and great technique.”

OPINION

Credit to Oxlade-Chamberlain, this was some strike, but even more impressive was his overall performance. After a torrid time last year recovering from a dreadful ligament injury, he is slowly working his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s plans, and this was a fine display to reemphasise just how important he can be for the Reds this season. Last night he registered a Whoscored rating of 8.76, as well as a pass completion rate of 88.9%, including on key pass. He also scored from two out of his three shots on goal, and both finishes were of the very, very highest order. This is the first time we have the Ox putting in the kind of domineering performance that he was threatening to prior to his injury, and it was brilliant to witness. Fingers crossed there is more of the same to come.
