Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has admitted that it was a struggle to remain at Anfield amid transfer speculation in the summer.

The Croatian international shared that he is a fighter and that he will continue to give everything for the Reds, and put his decision to stay down to having patience with Jurgen Klopp and his team selection.

Lovren reiterated that everything is fine at this moment in time, and featured in recent wins over both Leicester City and the 4-1 victory against Genk on Wednesday.

“Everything, at the moment, is fine,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“Let’s see what will happen. It was a challenge for me this summer to stay here but I gave everything in pre-season and I fought.”

The £100,000-a-week defender [Spotrac] was linked with moves to AC Milan and Roma [Sky Sports], moves that didn’t materialise.

OPINION

Any player that is struggling for consistent game time at any club would most likely admit that it is a struggle to not want to move away and try and earn just that. Lovren was in a rotation role for the majority of last season but after the resurgence of Joel Matip, it has seen him slip away and have to settle for chances when one of his teammates is missing. The 30-year-old has definitely backed up his words that he is a fighter by coming in against Leicester and was excellent, keeping the likes of Jamie Vardy relatively quiet. Lovren made seven clearances in that game according to WhoScored, and they are numbers that definitely means he deserves the chance to keep his spot, but that isn’t happening, and that could mean that he will need to look elsewhere next year if it doesn’t improve at all throughout this season.
