Liverpool midfield duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita could be left scrapping for their places at Anfield this season, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claim on their website that they could be struggling to prove their worth under Jurgen Klopp, with the likes of Fabinho, Georginio Wijnadlum, and Jordan Henderson all ahead in the pecking order.

The Liverpool Echo report that with seven games in the next three weeks, Oxlade-Chamberlain should expect some game time for the Reds, who are in numerous competitions in that time.

It is suggested that both could have featured in the 2-1 victory against Leicester City, but the England international was ruled out after being struck on the head by a ball in training.

OPINION

Liverpool are blessed with having numerous options in the heart of midfield, and that strength in depth will have left Klopp with many headaches in the past on what three to name in the middle of his side. The Reds’ success has meant that some players have had to settle for fewer minutes than they would like, and that definitely includes both Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Keita has yet to feature for a single minute in the Premier League this season and has struggled with injuries that will surely place him behind the England international in Klopp’s plans as they stand. Oxlade-Chamberlain has started a couple of games for the Reds and will be looking to earn back the spot he had cemented before picking up an injury a couple of years ago in the Champions League. Klopp will want a high level of competition in his side, and if two of his midfield players need to scrap to prove their worth then it will surely lead to higher levels of performance in his squad.
