Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has admitted that his jaw hit the floor when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored his second goal in the 4-1 victory against Genk on Wednesday.

Watching from the touchline, the Reds’ midfielder claimed that it was typical of Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is capable of making the difficult look ordinary when given the opportunity.

Henderson admitted that all he could do was clap when the ball hit the back of the net, going onto claim that the two goals will give the England international a real boost moving forward in the Premier League.

“And on Ox: two goals midweek and the second of those was a ‘wow’ moment,” he wrote in the official club programme, as quoted on the Reds’ website.

“I was warming up on the touchline when he scored it and after I picked my jaw off the floor, I couldn’t do anything but clap. That’s such a difficult technique to pull off, but it is typical Ox.”

The Liverpool captain also heaped praise on Adam Lallana, who also recently scored in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

OPINION

There is no doubting the fact that Oxlade-Chamberlain’s second goal against Genk was simply irresistible. The 26-year-old curled a delightful effort into the top corner off the bar with the outside of his foot, and Henderson was clearly amazed by the unstoppable strike. That is what the England international is capable of, and Jurgen Klopp will have been very impressed with the effect he had on the game. There has been many question marks over whether or not Liverpool have enough creativity in midfield, and the players that can support their prolific front three by adding more goals and assists, and Wednesday’s game clearly highlighted that they do and more. Oxlade-Chamberlain can’t rest on that performance though and needs to impress more than just his captain moving forward, and if he can do just that, there will be a spot waiting for him every single week in the Premier League.
