Van Dijk slammed on Twitter for display in Holland v Belarus

Virgil van Dijk had a moment to forget in the Netherlands’ 2-1 win against Belarus on Sunday night. It was a good night on the whole for the Liverpool centre-back as he watched team-mate Georginio Wijnaldum score twice for the Dutch side to put them top of their Euro 2020 qualifying group, albeit until Germany play later in the day. However the former Southampton centre-back was largely at fault for Belarus’ goal when he misjudged a high ball into the box and was beaten in the air by Stanislav Dragun, who went on to score and ruin Holland’s chances of a clean sheet. As expected, a lot of football fans then took to Twitter to pile on the Liverpool defender, with one going as far to say that van Dijk is one of the most “overrated” players in the world.

It’s a ridiculous statement based on the fact he was beaten to the ball in the air in one match against Belarus. Van Dijk remains a Champions League winner. He remains top of the Premier League table. He remains the best defender in world football.
