Liverpool defender Neco Williams is in contention to feature against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the 18-year-old could get the opportunity should Trent Alexander-Arnold be rested, with Ki-Jana Hoever unavailable for the Reds while he represents the Netherlands in the under-17’s World Cup.

The Liverpool Echo report that Williams could make his debut at Anfield, and has previously been described by Steven Gerrard as a magnificent talent from his time working with the academy.

Representing Wales at under-19s level, Williams is described as an attacking full-back who loves to get forward at any given opportunity.

OPINION

Jurgen Klopp proved in the third round against the MK Dons that he is not afraid to give academy players the opportunity if he thinks they are ready. That will be the ultimate motivation for players such as Williams to get their head down and push for first-team football. Hoever would most likely have been a guaranteed starter for the game against Arsenal on Wednesday, but with the Dutchman being on international duty, there is a spot up for grabs in defence. Alexander-Arnold recently missed the Champions League game against Genk, and although he returned against Tottenham, he may not be ready for another game only a few days after – giving Williams the perfect opportunity to come in at Anfield. The 18-year-old would fit Klopp’s system perfectly and would give him free rein to push forward and provide an added threat in the final third. Williams is more than capable of that too, having scored against Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Youth League at the beginning of October.
