Liverpool starlet Trent Alexander-Arnold has responded to Gary Lineker’s tweet suggesting he should play as a creative midfielder.

The Match of the Day host shared a video of the England defender spraying a long range diagonal against Genk on Tuesday with the caption: “Would love to see Trent Alexander-Arnold play a similar role to Kevin De Bruyne”.

Responding that tweet via his personal account, Alexander-Arnold himself said: “One position at a time”, followed by a smug-faced emoji.

OPINION

Alexander-Arnold in midfield is such a fascinating prospect. The youngster has a sublime range of passing, and the way that strikes shots and set pieces shows that he possesses a very real and very exciting goal threat too. So far this season he has averaged 3.3 key passes per game in all competitions, as per Whoscored, and already has four assists to his name, making an average of 69.5 passes per match in the process. As a point of reference, De Bruyne has made 3.9 key passes per game so far this term, with an averaged of 47.2 passes per match, as per Whoscored. Crucially though, Alexander-Arnold is playing at right-back, not in a free-roaming midfield role. You wouldn’t be against him making the transition, of course, although by the sounds of it, he is quite happy to continue in his current berth.
