Sky Sports pundit Darren Bent has claimed that Tottenham might want to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Liverpool at some point next year.

Football Insider has reported that the 28-year-old Switzerland international wants to quit Anfield in 2020 after spending much of his two-and-a-half years at the club sat on the fringes of Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Ex-Spurs striker Bent reckons that his old club could take an interest in Shaqiri, while adding that Arsenal might also want to take a look at the former Stoke attacker.

“I think Arsenal would probably take him, Manchester City nope, Chelsea nope, Spurs may potentially take him as well,” Bent told Football Insider.

“I think there will be no shortage of takers so he has nothing to fear about that.”

OPINION

Shaqiri has struggled at Liverpool. It is not that he has played badly when Klopp has used him, it’s just that he has never really forced his way up the pecking order. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane start almost every big match there is so there are limited chances for Shaqiri to impress. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi also appear to be above Shaqiri in the pecking order too, which makes it even harder for him to get a match. The ex-Bayern Munich player has not featured in a match for more than 11 minutes this season and that was in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City in August. Injuries have not helped the Swiss attacker but leaving Anfield does seem like something that he’ll have to consider next year. Klopp might not want to lose Shaqiri in January, but the next summer transfer window could be when the player parts company with the European champions.
