Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has withdrawn from the Holland squad for their final European Championship qualifier against Estonia.

The Dutch FA confirmed the news on Sunday, as relayed by the Mirror, that the Reds’ enforcer had left the international squad due to personal reasons.

Van Dijk has been pulled out of the squad and will return to Anfield instead of taking part against Estonia after completing all 90 minutes of the 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland that saw them secure their qualification.

The 28-year-old has played every single minute of Liverpool’s 12 Premier League games this season, with the Reds securing an eight-point gap at the top of the table before the break.

OPINION

Could this international break get any worst for Liverpool right now? Their list of injury problems continues to grow as the days carry on, and Jurgen Klopp could be facing a real selection headache when they travel to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. With Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Andrew Robertson, and Joe Gomez also injured, the Reds currently have a key player doubtful in every single position, so adding van Dijk to that list could lead to a nightmare couple of weeks after the break. Van Dijk has established himself as the best in the world since moving to Anfield, and should he be out, that would leave Dejan Lovren as the only senior option available in the heart of the defence. Joel Matip is also injured at this moment, so Sepp van den Berg could be required to step up at Palace, and after a shaky start in his debut against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup that could lead to some problems. The report doesn’t specify what is wrong with van Dijk, so all Liverpool fans will all have their fingers crossed that it isn’t an injury.
