Jamie Carragher has thrown his backing behind Steven Gerrard becoming the next Liverpool manager when Jurgen Klopp eventually leaves the club.

The Reds’ boss has already stated that he thinks Gerrard should be his successor, as per Four Four Two, and Carragher has agreed with that sentiment.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, he said: “Why not?

“There will be a clamour for probably a lot of people I think whenever Jurgen Klopp decides his time is up at Liverpool but hopefully that’s a long way away.

“There’s no doubt Steven Gerrard will come into that because of the job he’s doing at Rangers but also because he’s a Liverpool legend.”

OPINION

Carragher is surely echoing the thoughts of many Liverpool fans with this one. Gerrard is still universally adored on Merseyside, and his popularity is always going to stand him in good stead if and when the manager’s job does become available. Popularity is one thing, of course, but talent is another entirely, and increasingly it looks as if the 39-year-old has the skills to back up his reputation at Anfield. Rangers currently sit level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, second to the Hoops only on goal difference. His average of 2.04 points per game is seriously impressive too, as per Transfermarkt, and if he could replicate that form on Merseyside, he would be a hero, as he was as a player.
