Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has urged his old club to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Speaking to the Daily Express, who assert that the German international is a long-term target for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, Heskey spelled out what the 23-year-old would think about a potential Anfield switch.

“You always want to challenge yourself, regardless of who else is there,” he said. “hen I came to Liverpool, Robbie Fowler and Michael [Owen] were there. Players like that.

“I think Titi Camara was there too and he had a good start to the season. [Could Werner join Liverpool?] I don’t see why not.”

OPINION

Werner has long been linked with a move to Liverpool, and you can see why. Klopp will have been well aware of the Leipzig star from his days in the Bundesliga, when Werner was just beginning his rise through the ranks, and will surely have been impressed by his maturation into one of the finest goalscorers in Europe. Werner would be a terrific signing for anybody but, as with any attacker the Reds are linked with, the question is would they get regular game time with the team’s fearsome front three already in place? With that said, then, it’s probably best to compare Werner to Divock Origi as that high-end back up option behind Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. And when you do that the German comes off very well indeed. As per WhoScored.com, he has way outscored and out-assisted Origi this season, while he is averaging more shots, key passes and successful dribbles per game. Furthermore, his average WhoScored rating of 7.66 is way ahead of the Belgian’s tally of 6.45.
