Former Premier League midfielder Don Hutchison has named Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk as his Man of the Match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Dutch international once again led the way for the Reds as they battled to a 2-1 victory over Roy Hodgson’s side, and BBC pundit Hutchison was very impressed by him.

When Liverpool’s official Twitter account asked for people’s Liverpool Man of the Match from the victory at Selhurst Park, Hutchison had no hesitation.

“V V D,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Yeah, this was another typical Van Dijk performance on Saturday. The 28-year-old led by example at the back, producing a solid outing as the European champions did just enough – as they’ve been doing for much of the campaign – to ease past a very resilient Palace team. We know Selhurst Park is a difficult place to go, but Van Dijk ensured that his team handled it with aplomb. The statistics show that the former Southampton man put in another display of consummate centre back brilliance. As per WhoScored.com, he made a tackle, an interception and a colossal 10 clearances, the most of any player on the pitch. Furthermore, he made 70 passes, the second most of anyone, with a terrific success rate of 92.9%. He also had three shots, with only Roberto Firmino having more for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp’s team weren’t at their best once again, but when you have Van Dijk playing like this you’ve always got a decent chance of winning.
