Liverpool are in a four-team transfer battle for Rangers’ teenage defender Leon King, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish outlet claims that the British giants fear they will lose the 15-year-old, who doesn’t turn 16 until January, in a similar manner to how Billy Gilmour left for Chelsea.

King has turned down Gers’ first offer of a professional contract, which has led to the Reds, Manchester City, Chelsea and German heavyweights RB Leipzig circling.

The youngster is thought to be one of the most prodigious talents in Steven Gerrard’s side’s academy.

OPINION

Firstly, it would surely be a sickener for Gerrard to lose King as he did Gilmour. The Chelsea man is now a regular part of Frank Lampard’s match-day squad and made his Premier League debut earlier this season. We’re talking about a similar sort of talent in King, and so you can see why several top teams are monitoring his situation. Obviously he’s turned down Gers’ first contract offer, so perhaps he already has one eye on the Ibrox exit door. On the other hand, though, he might simply be looking for a deal that better represents his tremendous talent. It’s difficult to say at this time. Liverpool are keeping an eye out for the best young talent, which is always a good thing. That’s a big reason why top teams stay at the pinnacle of the game. They are able to pluck and develop the best young prospects around, and they sometimes go on to become key first team players. That’s what all these teams are hoping to do with King, so we’ll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.
