Former Premier League midfielder Don Hutchison has sent a gushing message to Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk after his recent heart-warming gesture.

The Reds star posted a video on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday of him surprising a Liverpool supporter who was starved of oxygen when he was young and therefore developed slightly slower.

Van Dijk took the fan to Melwood and gave him a tour and introduced him to teammates like Mohamed Salah and Alisson. BBC pundit Hutchison was very impressed by the Dutchman’s gesture.

“Love this,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

This really was a nice moment from Van Dijk, and you could see how much it meant to the supporter. He was completely starstruck when Van Dijk strolled up to him asking for help with his trolley, and he even initially rejected the Dutchman’s offer to take him to Melwood because he was at work. Once he was assured that his job had approved his absence for this special occasion, he happily went off with the Reds star and enjoyed a fantastic afternoon mingling with some of the best footballers on the planet. It’s gestures likes this that speak to how good of a person Van Dijk is, as well as a magnificent footballer. You need your footballers to do things like this, to strengthen the bond between a club and its community. Liverpool are very good at doing that, and that’s part of the reason why they have such a phenomenally strong bond with the supporters.
