Liverpool fans baffled by Fabinho omission

|

OPINION

There’s a very strong argument to be made for Fabinho being the best central defensive midfielder in European football at the moment. Certainly, he is one of the finest in England, and he has started the season in fantastic form. So far this term he has averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in all competitions, as per Whoscored, as well as a pass completion rate of 87% and a match rating of 7.09. In short, he has been the ideal defensive midfielder for much of the campaign, and so it’s somewhat surprising that he hasn’t seen that form translate into a regular international starting spot. The Liverpool ace was once again left out of Brazil’s starting lineup for their 1-0 defeat to Argentina, and many Kopites were baffled by the decision. It’s not hard to see why either. Casemiro, who usually occupies that role for the five-time world champions, is a top quality player, but Fabinho is at the peak of his powers, playing for an imperious side who win week in, week out, and his talents, combined with that winning mentality, should surely be enough to justify his selection. What more can he do at this stage to secure himself a place?
