The FA has confirmed that Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out of England’s clash with Kosovo on Sunday.

The Football Association revealed on their website that the 22-year-old enforcer has picked up a knock to his knee in training on Friday, and has not recovered to travel for the final European Championship qualifier.

It was shared that Jordan Henderson will also remain in England, with the virus that ruled him out of the Montenegro game still not cleared for the Reds’ captain to make the trip to Pristina.

Liverpool duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold are still set to travel for the game against Kosovo.

OPINION

This is a real blow for Gomez especially, who after his altercation with Raheem Sterling was expected to start after the squad rallied around him in support [Rob Dorsett]. The former Charlton man was left devastated by the jeering that was heard when he entered the game against Montenegro, and he will surely leave the England camp with a bitter taste in his mouth. Not only was Sunday’s game against Kosovo a chance to impress Gareth Southgate, but also an opportunity to show Jurgen Klopp that he can cement a spot in the side at Anfield after only really getting chances in the Champions League this season. With Joel Matip still out injured, there is a spot still up for grabs, but with Gomez now injured, Dejan Lovren has more than cemented that position alongside Virgil van Dijk. This week couldn’t have really gone much worst for Gomez who will be looking to leave it in the past as quickly as possible when returning to Merseyside.
