Merson: Title race is over

Paul Merson has claimed that the title race is already finished, and that Liverpool are nailed on to win the Premier League.

The Reds currently hold a eight point lead at the top of the table, and a nine point lead over defending champions Manchester City, who lie fourth behind Leicester City and Chelsea.

And Merson is convinced the season is over as a contest.

Writing in a column for the Daily Star, he said: “The title race is over so you might as well crown Liverpool champions now.

“Do I think City can come back from nine points behind? No chance. Liverpool have lost once in about 52 games.

“They would have to lose three times before the end of the season and that’s without City losing a game. Can anyone see that happening?”

OPINION

It’s hard to disagree with Merson on this one. Obviously, the more cautious of Liverpool fans will tell you that the season isn’t over until it’s over, and that their side have blown is similar commanding leads in the past. But things feel different this time. This Liverpool team is a different class, and it looks every inch the squad of a champion in waiting. The strength with which they have started this season, unbeaten over their first 12 games and comfortably beating City last weekend, it’s hard to imagine them losing at all, let alone three times between now and the end of the season. The simple fact of the matter is that they are the best team in the country, perhaps even in Europe, and it will take a massive upset for them to throw away the lead they have built up over the opening stages of this campaign. Don’t be surprised to see it widen between now and May.
