Pearce: Werner rumours are rubbish

Rumours linking Timo Werner with a move to Liverpool are “rubbish”, according to James Pearce.

The 28 cap German hitman has been mooted as a possible target for the Reds, with transfer expert Ian McGarry even going as far as to suggest that talks had been opened over a possible switch to Anfield, as per the Transfer Window Podcast.

But Pearce has poured cold water over any such suggestions of the Reds making a move for the striker, who has 11 in 11 in the Bundesliga this term.

Writing in a Q&A for the Athletic, he said: “He’s someone the club have watched closely but it’s never gone beyond that.

“The last time I checked out that rumour I was told it was rubbish and I’ve not heard anything more on it since.”

OPINION

This is a bit of a shame truth be told. Werner is a superb player, and one who would be an asset to just about any side in Europe. So far this season he has been in fine form, hitting 11 goals in 11 games in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig, as well as four assists. Beyond that, he has averaged 3.7 shots on goal, 2.2 key passes, and 1.6 successful dribbles per game, as per Whoscored, and looks every inch the elite striker. He is still only 23, and his potential is sky high. The only thing you would perhaps temper this disappointment with is the fact that the Reds aren’t exactly short of a goal threat themselves, and it’s hard to see them buying anybody with the express intention of displacing Roberto Firmino through the middle. In fact, you could even argue that with the likes of Rhian Brewster coming through the ranks, they are fairly well covered for the future too. That being said, nobody would turn down a swoop for a player as dangerous as Werner, surely.
