OPINION
Could we look back on Saturday afternoon as the vital turning point on which the title race finally pivoted irreversibly in Liverpool’s favour? The Reds won all three points in a tetchy affair with Brighton at Anfield, but more importantly, Manchester City dropped points again, this time with a late 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. That means that Liverpool are now 11 points clear at the top of the table, and they had an old Kop ace to thank for that widened gap. It was Jonjo Shelvey who struck a stunner to silence City, and it’s safe to say that the midfielder knew just how well his goal would be received on Merseyside. As quoted by journalist David O’Connell on Twitter, he said: “I’ll be a hero around Liverpool now”. And it’s hard to argue with that statement. Every little inch that the Reds can eke out over City in the coming weeks will be cheered to the rafters at Anfield, and with the gap now looking like a chasm at 11 points, it’s hard to see any way back for City. As for Shelvey, the old boy did good for the Kop.
