Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres celebrates his 36th birthday today and the club’s official Twitter channel @LFC marked the occasion, with many Reds fans continuing to hold the Spaniard in glowing regard.

He arrived at Anfield in 2007 from Atletico Madrid in a £20m deal (as per BBC) and scored 24 goals in his first Premier League season, as well as being named in the PFA Team of the Year. A further 14 league goals followed as the Reds narrowly missed out on the title the following season and he would end up with 81 Liverpool goals in total.

However, Torres made a shock £50m move to Chelsea on transfer deadline day in January 2011 and was heckled by travelling Kopites on his Blues debut against his former club a week later. He endured a tough start to life at Stamford Bridge but still won two European trophies with the Londoners before returning to Atletico (via a loan spell at AC Milan) and finished his career with Sagan Tosu in Japan, retiring from the game last June.

Despite that contentious 2011 switch to Chelsea, these Liverpool fans on Twitter have not lost any love for Torres, a lasting “childhood hero” for some Kopites:
