Plenty of Liverpool fans have welcomed this afternoon’s announcement from the Premier League to extend the season indefinitely so that it is played out to a conclusion.

A joint statement from the Premier League, FA and EFL confirmed that professional football would not be played in England until 30 April at the earliest but the FA agreed to relax its ruling that the club season must finish by 1 June so that the 2019/20 season can be concluded, with the limit extended indefinitely for the current campaign.

The announcement has been greeted with relief by some Liverpool supporters, given their current 25-point lead at the top of the Premier League. When the season is resumed, the Reds will need just two wins from their final nine matches to guarantee a first league title in 30 years.

There had been calls from the likes of Karren Brady and Piers Morgan to declare the 2019/20 Premier League null and void if it couldn’t be resumed due to coronavirus, but this now looks most unlikely to happen. Sky Sports reporter Bryan Swanson noted: “There is a clear determination to finish the season before considering the start of next season.”

These Liverpool fans on Twitter were gleeful at today’s announcement regarding the current top-flight season:
