A number of Liverpool fans have mocked comments made by Raheem Sterling warning the Reds that they should expect a stiffer Premier League title challenge next season.

The Manchester City winger, who left Anfield for the Etihad Stadium five years ago, was speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his team’s derby clash against Manchester United yesterday and, as noted by @AnfieldWatch on Twitter, he fired a warning to his former club.

The 25-year-old told Sky Sports: “We won the league twice in a row. Liverpool are winning, leading at this point in time. But I’m pretty sure that come the end of the season our boys will go away and come back again very hurt if they do pick up the league, and we will be up and running for next season for sure. [It will be] a massive reaction.”

With a 25-point lead at the top and only two more wins needed to clinch the title, Liverpool are poised to exact revenge for missing out on the crown to Manchester City last season, with Pep Guardiola’s side shading an epic title race by 98 points to 97. They inflicted the Reds’ only league defeat of 2018/19 in what ultimately proved to be a fateful result.

Sterling, who declined a reported £100,000-a-week deal at Anfield in 2015 before joining Manchester City in a £49m move (as per BBC), has won eight trophies in his time at the Etihad Stadium, including two Premier League titles.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter shut down the comments from their former winger, with some resorting to sarcasm to goad the 25-year-old:

Liverpool fans, what did you make of Sterling’s jibe at his former club? Have your say by commenting below!
