The topic of goalkeeping understudy to Alisson at Liverpool has generated debate among some Reds fans as Loris Karius is set to return to the club following the premature termination of his loan deal with Besiktas this week.
While the Brazilian has one of the best clean sheet records in the Premier League, the German’s Liverpool career has been overshadowed by two calamitous mistakes in the 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. Adrian, who has deputised for Alisson when he has been injured this season, also erred badly on the European stage, his misdirected clearance leading to a goal for Atletico Madrid which sparked their comeback in a 3-2 win at Anfield last month.

With both Karius and Adrian having copped abuse from some fans on social media after their high-profile howlers, Twitter channel @AnfieldEdition asked followers which of the two they would prefer as Alisson’s go-to deputy, or whether they would rather see someone else brought into that role.
Many Reds supporters went for the latter option and called for either another goalkeeper at the club to be promoted to the role of number two or for an alternative to be signed from elsewhere. One Kopite gave the tongue-in-cheek suggestion that the versatile James Milner would be a goalkeeping upgrade on both Karius and Adrian:
