A number of Liverpool fans have ridiculed comments from former Premier League player Frank Sinclair claiming that Chelsea’s Reece James is a better defender than Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking to GentingBet [via Evening Standard], the ex-Jamaica international said: “Defensively, Reece James is a better defender than Alexander-Arnold at the moment. But it is hard to find a full-back that produces as many assists in Europe than Trent does for Liverpool.” He added: “As an all-round full-back, I think there is more to his game than Trent; he is good going forward but he is also very strong defensively.” His comments were later posted by @AnfieldEdition on Twitter.

James, 20 since December, has been lauded by pundits such as Paul Merson and Jermaine Jenas for his displays this season, scoring twice and setting up four goals in 1,747 minutes of game-time. However, his attacking influence cannot match that of Alexander-Arnold, 14 months his senior, who also has two goals but has claimed 14 assists in 3,365 minutes on the pitch in 2019/20.

Despite Sinclair’s claims that the Chelsea right-back is defensively better than his Liverpool counterpart, Alexander-Arnold has won more tackles per game (1.6 to 1.4) and made more interceptions per game (1.2 to 0.9) in the current Premier League campaign.

These Reds fans on Twitter rubbished Sinclair’s comparison of the two youngsters, with some mocking the ex-Chelsea defender’s unfortunate reputation for costly own goals during his Leicester days:
