Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that Liverpool were in talks with Kylian Mbappe as they were his mother’s favourite club.

The Lowdown: Everyone wanted Mbappe

The Kylian Mbappe contract saga has enveloped the footballing world, with Real Madrid the favourites throughout to make him their next Galactico.

Despite this, he recently signed a bumper deal with PSG which saw him become the highest-paid player in world football.

Jurgen Klopp was vocal in his interest in the 23-year-old but admitted Liverpool would never have been able to compete with the finances being discussed for the forward.

The Latest: Held talks with Liverpool

Talking to the Telegraph but confirmed by Romano, Mbappe reportedly spoke with Liverpool “because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool!”

He also revealed that he held talks with the club prior to his move to PSG from Monaco in 2017, claiming “it’s a good club and we met them five years ago”.

The Verdict: FSG never stood a chance

In all truth, Liverpool never really stood a chance to sign the player Pochettino has dubbed “amazing”.

Mbappe has enjoyed a remarkable season again for PSG, boasting 47 goal contributions in 35 league games, and a further 12 goal contributions in eight Champions League games. The French international is well on his way to battling for the Ballon d’Or.

The £144m-rated machine reportedly signed a £1m-per-week contract with the Parisian giants, with a further signing-on fee in the region of £100m.

With Liverpool’s reported highest wage-earner being Virgil Van Dijk, on £220k-per-week, and the club stalling over Salah’s contract demands, it further proves how the club were never truly in contention.

Although, the fact Mbappe even considered the Reds shows their pulling power rivals anyone in the game.

A Liverpool forward has been tipped to sign a new contract at the club. Find out who here.
