Lawro: Reds ended up with the better deal on deadline day

|

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson feels that despite the loss of Fernando Torres, Liverpool ended up with the better end of the deal on deadline day. Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror, he said:

“The debate will now start as to who got the better end of the bargain. Not that we can really describe the Premier League’s deadline day transfer merry-go-round as anything vaguely resembling a bargain. Fernando Torres cost Chelsea £50million. Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez together cost Liverpool a cool £57m. So who got better value for money? For me, Liverpool have lost their star striker, but have still ended up with the better deal. Chelsea now have a once world-class striker needing to regain his form. Kenny Dalglish’s problem with Torres at Liverpool was that they ended up with a player who was dissatisfied, had fallen out of love with playing for the club and wanted to leave. When someone like him says: “I want to leave and go to play for Chelsea” the best thing you can do is let him go – and then get the best deal for the club. You can’t replace a player of the quality of Torres. But if you can bring in two top quality players in his place for not much extra then that has to be good business. On his day, Torres is among the best strikers in the world. The problem is, we’ve only seen flashes of his brilliance this season.”

Lawrenson believes that Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll should excel as a strike partnership:

“Now Liverpool have two strikers in Suarez and Carroll, who look a really good fit together. They are dovetailed as a pair. Suarez looked top quality at the World Cup and has been prolific, sharp and full of pace and movement. Carroll has massive potential, he’s still young, can be wild off the pitch, yet has the ability to be Liverpool and England’s No.9 for the next few years. Liverpool will love Carroll and Carroll will love Liverpool. It’s always hard to replace top-quality forwards. Liverpool struggled to replace Kenny Dalglish himself. But if anyone knows how to replace Torres then it is Kenny. He’s done a good job in my opinion.”

This week it is even more of Liverpool WAG Alex Curran!

Sounds like a Liverpool fan desperate to make the most of a sick situation.
Imagine if a month ago Newcastle had approached Liverpool and said “We’ll give you Carroll plus 10m for Torres”.
They’d have been laughed at. A street thug and lummox like Carroll plus just 10m for Torres?????
Yet that is the exact equivalent of what Liverpool have now accepted! Of the 45m received for Torres, they’ve given all but 10m straight to Newcastle.
Incredible folly. Amazing stupidity. Laughing stocks.

      sounds like sour grapes

Typical anti-Liverpool response, nothing constructive to add to the debate except negative comments. We got two players for £57m, not one! Berbatov cost £30.75m, 28yrs old…it was ok for Utd to pay that but when Liverpool buy an expensive upcoming english talent it’s suddenly stupid? Wind your neck in!

he will have to apologise to us when carroll is englands number 1 striker and the prems best number 9 .whereas torres will be sat on the treatment table with terry wondering why he left a team like lfc to join the pensioners brigade

@ Sir Cecil, What if two months ago they approached Liverpool and offered them Suarez and Carroll for an unhappy Torres what do you think they would’ve done ?

  • RedNProud says:

I’m not really interested in the who got the best deal debate as other clubs don’t concern me.
All I know is that we have lost a disaffected world class player and brought in two potential world class players to replace him.
With Luis and Adam added to the squad we will be much stronger and the future looks brighter.
Thanks John Henry, FSG and King Kenny for allowing us to dream again.

  • RedNProud says:

    @ Sir Cecil
£35M for Carroll is excessive but we’ve bought a young British player with great potential in the January window which always inflates the fee. In comparison Chealsea have paid £50M for a tempremental a world class player who has been injured more often than not over the past couple of seasons.
Both clubs have gambled on the players coming good and what price would you pay if they do.

  • EqualRed says:

Liverpool had to pay 57M for two strikers but sold two strikers for 56M, Torres and Babbel. So in next summer Liverpool start from zero.

  • Alan says:

I don’t get the fact that people are saying he was disinterested at Liverpool and wanted to leave. That may be true but it can’t be used as an excuse for his form.
In the World Cup he had arguably the best players in the world around him and he was dreadful absolutely dreadful. I was like all the other reds making excuses for him but to be honest he has been average at best for 12 months. I think we got a great deal in Carroll and Suarez. Let the plastic flags have him, there worldwide support of 50,000 can see for themselves that he’s full of potential but delivers so irregularly

  • RedMist!!! says:

Liverpool sold 1 dissaffected striker and another striker that never fulfilled his potential. They gained 2 young very talented up and coming strikers. One is already a world star and the other set to be England number 9 for years to come! He’s only just turned 22 and he’s england number 9 5 years off his prime! Of course Liverpool got the better of the deal!

  • varun says:

Bring in Sanchez( to replace kuyt), Coentrao and an alonzoneske player and here we go.. Liverpool FC champions!!!

  • Dave says:

Gutted to lose Torres and especially so to a Premiership team. It is likely that he will really shine at Chelsea but I think the same would have been true at Liverpool if he had given Kenny a chance..

I agree that Carroll and Suarez seem overpriced but I dont think anyone will argue that they are both exceptional players and looking at Kennys history with Strikers I think the future looks bright… Kenny was the one who brought Shearer and Sutton to Blackburn at high prices and look how well they turned out!!

Keep pushing lads – lets take 4th away from Chelski and show Torres who the Big Club is 😉
