So Why Is This Honduran Interesting Liverpool?

|

It was widely reported at the weekend that Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was at the Old Firm Derby between Rangers and Celtic to run the rule over Celtic’s Honduran left back Emilio Izaguirre. So what is the background to this international defender?

Izaguirre made his league debut for Honduran side Club Deportivo Motagua back in 2004 in a 3-0 victory over Universidad aged just 17. Since then he has impressed for his club side and was one of the club’s best performer’s as Motagua won the 2006/07 Apertura and 2007 UNCAF Club Championships. Such performances did not go unnoticed at international level and after helping Honduras qualify for the 2005 U20 World Cup in the Netherlands, he got his first full cap for the senior side in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. During the tournament, he established himself in the first team with a great display in a 2-1 win over Mexico in the group stages.

Earning selection consistently for the national side, his reputation was increasing fast and Championship side Ipswich Town gave the player a trial in July 2008. After 17 days with the Tractor Boys though, his international clearance failed to come through and the move to England collapsed. Despite this setback though, he continued to perform well and as he was still very young, he was still eligable to be part of the U23 squad for the 2008 Beijing Olympics football tournament. After the games, he was still consistently picked by senior team manager Reinaldo Rueda and has accumulated 44 caps for his country at the age of 24.

In his last season for Motagua, he was voted the best player in the country by the national media despite missing a fair few months with a broken collar bone. With such plaudits, he was inevitably picked for Honduras’s 23 man squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. During the tournament, he played two of the country’s three matches in the group stages, against Chile and Spain, and his impressive performances got him a few more admirers last summer.

Their is no point in wasting anymore money on leftbacks. Leave Johnson their for next season and promote Mavinga to rotate with him in the Premiership. Sell Insua and Konchesky. Instead of the club wasting money on average players like this Honduran guy, the club needs to find a manager that has the guts and brains and motivational ability to actually bring all the highly rated youth players into the Premier League squad rather than Dalglish bringing five of them to Romania to watch a match that they could have seen on television.
