Assessing the strength of LFC’s squad for the upcoming season

|

The signing of Jose Enrique means that we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief over the fact that the search for a player to occupy our problem left back position is finally over. What it also means is that for the first time in what seems like years, Liverpool’s squad is looking extremely healthy.

Every top manager aims to have at least two decent players challenging for each position within the squad, and Liverpool seem to be getting somewhere towards that goal with their signings this summer. The signings made maybe haven’t been as eye catching as certain other teams’ new recruits but what I will say is that Kenny Dalglish has made some very intelligent acquisitions which have taken our squad depth up a level.

Looking at Liverpool’s defence, we have the best goalkeeper in the league in Pepe Reina and then as his back up we have a Brazil international with Champions League experience in the shape of Doni. At right back I fully expect Martin Kelly to put some serious pressure on Glen Johnson in the battle for a first XI place. Left back is of course now sorted with the arrival of Jose Enrique, meaning that we can actually afford to use Fabio Aurelio as sparingly as possible.

I’m not in agreement with those who believe we need to sign a new centre back this summer as we currently have three reliable first teamers in this position with Carragher, Agger and Skrtel. Sotirios Kyrgiakos earned himself a contract extension with a number of impressive performances last season and in time I can see the young Scotland international, Danny Wilson breaking into the first team on a much more regular basis.

Midfield is definitely where we’re healthiest with Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Charlie Adam and Raul Meireles forming a very impressive quartet in the centre. I would love Alberto Aquilani to stay but time will tell if he will get the chance to play in Kenny Dalglish’s new Liverpool. On the left we have two experienced England internationals in the shape of Stewart Downing, who has really impressed me during pre season with the urgency in his play, and Joe Cole, who will have a point to prove this season if he’s still here come September 1st.

While I agree with the majority of this article , there is surely no point in spending all these millions and relying on the four CB’S mentioned .

In the Premiership the choice should be any two from Agger , Skrtel and one other . Carragher should be senior back-up (by the way , I am JC’S biggest fan) .

Fortunately , Kenny feels the same way as the Tony Pulis press conference this morning shows .

We have quality competition for places all around the team except CB . Kelly and Wilson are some time away from being first choice , though they will both become fine players .
