Hodgson: I was the wrong man at the wrong time

Former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has admitted he wasn’t the right man to take the club forward when he was appointed last summer. He told the London Evening Standard:

“I do not regret taking the job. It is a big job. But I went there at the wrong time. I was not the right man at that particular time in the club’s history. I was a bit concerned and I went in with my eyes open, knowing this could be problematic. I was fully aware Martin Broughton and Christian Purslow [then chairman and managing director] were trying to sell the club. There would be new owners and they might want to make a change. I am not certain the new American owners were determined to do that but they wanted to listen to the fans. That is the way American clubs operate.”

Hodgson was aware of who the fans really wanted:

“Kenny [Dalglish] had said he wanted the job and a lot of fans made it pretty clear they did not want me, they wanted Kenny. My situation was not strong anyway from the first moment and the results were not good.”

just shut the fu**up because you sent us back 40yrs

    Roy,
Whilst Im not your biggest fan, you certainly were not helped by the fact our club was in the process of being sold.

You could easily have said no to the job, that King Kenny should get the job. Perhaps our old American owners should have listened to the fans!

Same old story again. Same goes for Torres who keeps on criticising the club. But on our side, we have gone over that and wished them well.

I think that once you work for Liverpool, it’s not easy to forget. See how Xabi, Rafa, Sammi, and to a extent Masch (dedicating his champs league victory to us)still have a soft spot for this institution called Liverpool FC.

There was also the fact that your away record was laughable, as it was at Fulham. Contrary to the belief of many, you were never hounded out and you were given plenty of time. You left the club flirting near relegation. You simply couldn’t cut it a big club. sorry mate, dat’s da facts.

Manager can only be judged on results, tactics and the players they signed. In his time in charge Liverpool had their worst start since the year we were relegated in the 50’s partially due to bad tactically planning against teams like Wolves!

By 1/9/11 there is a very strong possibility that none of the players he purchased will be at the club including Cole, Poulsen, Konchesky, Danny Wilson, Jovanich and possibly even Meireles, as (with the exeption of Meireles) none of these players were good enough for a club of the stature of Liverpool.

I’m sick of hearing how badly Roy was treated by Liverpool fans! If he had come in and did a good job he would still be there and we wouldn’t have needed to sing “Hodgson for England” & “Dalglish” at games or write “Hodgson Out” on the walls of Melwood. The fact is he is a middle table survivalist manager at best, who would have had to have been more successful than he had ever been in any previous job just to have what would have been consider a poor season for Benitez!

Added to this the fact that he seemed to be “friendly” with Sir Alex Ferguson but in fairness we have to blame Purslow for his appointment but thank God Kenny was in the wings waiting!
Roy Hodgson was NEVER good enough and will hopefully realise his limitations and stick with clubs like West Brom!

Completely agree, but I don’t really blame him for the bad signings, especially Cole, Poulsen, and Konchesky – I blame Purslow for those. Meireles is class and was purchased based on Rafa’s scouting reports. Wilson and Jovanovich were Rafa’s buys – Wilson is for the future, and Jova may well have been more of a success with Rafa at the helm.

A fair and honest assessment from Roy. I suspect he will do well at WBA and good luck to him. Hopefully LFC have turned a corner on and off the field.

  • VishRed says:

Roy, I didn’t mind having you at the club..what I hated about you are your signings and your lack of tactics.

Let’s face it, he was brought in because he is a bit of a “yes” man when it comes to the media.

Rafa was far too outspoken to be trusted during the sale, especially considering the way it went down. So they brought in a “nice guy” who was nice to the press and because he’s English, wouldn’t be as harshly criticised by pundits and journalists alike – which is exactly what happened – Liverpool are flirting with relegation and the pundits are berating the fans for demanding a new manager.

But if Rafa had been there the sale probably would have all gone to s**t. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the guy, and even though he seemed to crumble under the pressure in the last season we had some good times under him. But he was not the man to be in the hot seat during a sale as fragile as the one LFC went through!!

    • Paul says:

What crap! Why the hell would Rafa have made any difference to the sale process???? Purslow sacked him because he decided he wasn’t good enough and he got yes-man Hodgson coz 1. He (Purslow) could play football manager 2. He’s English 3. He’s (Purslow) a f&^()ng smart-ass idiot know-it-all who knows f all. In my opinion Rafa would’ve gotten on like a house on fire with the new owners, they have exactly the attitude Rafa had. They want a project, a building process, for long term success, and I believe (and they’ve hinted) they were a bit annoyed Rafa was sacked before they came to the club.

he was the wrong man at any time, he is putting feelers out for the england job, the arrogance of the man, i found for the first time when west brom played chelsea that i was able to look at him without my stomach turning over and immediately hitting the off button, but it only lasted a few seconds, i’m afraid i will never get over that that words fail me.

  • stan howard says:

dig at rafa – i cant believe the amount of players we have here, a few weeks later after the nothampton defeat, we havnt got enough players,
stil kenny has got to grips with it we are liverpool fc again (i like rafa but let himself and us down his last buys were not the right ones)

  • dave says:

“I was the wrong man at the wrong time”…… NO Woy! you were just the wrong man.

  • Paul says:

Typical Roy. Nothing against the guy, but I find him to be very arrogant. Not once was he to blame for anything! Granted when he came we had lost a few players, but he still had a good enough squad to challenge for top 4, not relegation(!!!), but tried to make us all believe the “crap” squad he inherited was to blame. The same “crap” squad, somehow became good again when Kenny arrived. Then it’s us the fans to blame! No consideration for your useless, negative, small team tactics? He can only do well with a small team, end of.
