Why I can’t wait for Kenny to unleash him on our opponents

|

The last minute departure of Raul Meireles on transfer deadline day took some of the gloss off what was a hugely successful transfer window for Liverpool. One transfer in particular that I was desperate to see happen was the acquisition of Craig Bellamy, who at 32 is still a major threat to opposing teams.

It was clear that Liverpool’s main focus over the summer was to strengthen the wide areas, but as we approached the transfer deadline, I must admit to biting my nails over the fact that the team was still looking short of cover up front. Thankfully, all my worries were put to bed on the final day of August when it was announced that the pacy Welshman was making his way to Merseyside to complete a return to the club he left in 2007 after one season.

It is fair to say that Bellamy’s return has been met with a predominantly positive reaction from Reds fans, and I can see why. I personally have wanted this transfer to happen since last year when it became clear that Bellamy no longer had a future at Manchester City. He of course ended up at Cardiff on loan for the season while Liverpool were left regretting not signing another forward to play up front with Fernando Torres. Thankfully for the Reds, they reportedly failed with a last ditch attempt to sign Carlton Cole from West Ham a year ago but the squad still lacked decent cover up front.

Fast forward to this season and Liverpool’s forward department looks so much healthier, with four current international strikers reflecting the depth we now have in the team. What I can’t wait to see is Craig Bellamy’s dangerous pace being used against opposing defences throughout the course of the season, and who knows, the Wales man may give Kenny Dalglish a real selection headache during the campaign. Everyone has accepted that Bellamy is purely a back up striker for us but who is to say that he won’t give Andy Carroll a serious run for his money and oust the £35 million man from the first XI.

Unleash Bellamy? Stop exaggerating. Bellamy is no Messi. At best, he is only a decent footballer. Stoke deservedly brought Liverpool back to Earth. Yeah, yeah Henderson will soon be the best midfielder in the world. Sure, sure… yet giving acres of space and all the time in the world, he couldn’t even make it count. Wow! what a potential. And with Carroll playing and looking like a donkey, Liverpool will be a threat to any team. Yep… sure.
