The Reds were on the verge of acquiring an historic double when they arrived at Wembley under the supervision of player-manager Kenny Dalglish for the FA Cup Final, having already secured the First Division trophy. As the match progressed, Everton scored first through Gary Lineker and went ahead to dominate the first –half. After the break however, there came a rejuvenated Liverpool through Ian Rush who equalized on 57 minutes by rounding Bobby Mimms. Accumulating confidence, the Reds found the net again through Craig Johnson. A combination of Ronnie Whelan and Jan Molby brilliance then opened up Ian Rush to complete the assault with 6 minutes left, thereby securing the Reds victory over their arch-rivals.

9. Everton 1-0 Liverpool, 28 October 1978

Everton had been trailing Liverpool in victories for seven years. Unconvincing Marilyn Monroe doppelgänger, Andy King in the midfield made the difference in this wonderful encounter. The Reds later went on to win the league that season but departed Goodison Park with less than a smiling face.

8. Everton 2-1 Liverpool, 24 January 1981

Imre Varadi had just joined the seniors at the Goodison Park and his strike in 1981 added to Peter Eastoe’s goal to double their lead in a fourth round tie of the cup which resulted in incurring the wrath of the travelling Red fans. He was pelted in the face with a meat and potato pie for celebrating his goal in front of the angry Reds! Wish we had the video of that!

7. Liverpool 3-1 Everton, 29 October 2000

Joining Liverpool from Everton had always been something that is not usually well received by the aggrieved party. Nick Barmby had just joined the Reds in summer of 2000 – the first player to do so since Dave Hickson in 1959. He opened the scoring, with a beautiful nod coming from a Christian Ziege cross in just 12 minutes. The score was leveled by Kevin Campbell, who was the Blues key player in the game. A goal from Emile Heskey and a penalty from Patrick Berger gave the Reds the edge over their rivals in the end.

Although, manager Gerard Houllier claimed that his celebration was ‘eating grass,’ it seems the original motive was to provide response to for untrue allegations concerning Fowler’s off-field habits from the Everton fans. It got the wanted effect, as the police rose up to investigate around the visitors section, but his actions landed him in trouble, as he was fined £60,000 by Houllier, whilst the FA handed him a four match suspension prior to his previous spat with Chelsea’s Graeme Le Saux.

However, he did not commit the error again as he added a further goal later on.

Going into the second half, Markus Babbel gave the Reds the lead and the game should have been over but Robbie Fowler sent his penalty within the reach of Paul Gerrard.

Igor Biscan made matters worse when he secured a dismissal for two bookable fouls and David Unsworth proceeded to equalize with just seven minutes remaining.
