Manager With ‘Best CV’ Set For Talks With FSG?

FABIO Capello is said to have been approached by a representative from Liverpool FC,  sparking rumours that he has been invited to hold further talks with owners FSG in Boston.

Reports coming out of ESPN claim that Capello has been sounded out by the Reds and is interested in the position after turning down the opportunity to join newly crowned European Champions Chelsea.

Capello, who still has a home in West London, was thought to have initially sought the Chelsea job, but  the Italian has now ruled himself out of that equation.

It was claimed that an agent representing Liverpool approached Capello before the Champions League final to enquire as to his interest in the position and has since held preliminary talks, at which he expressed a desire to be considered. However those same ESPN sources now state that no official approach has been made.

Of all the listed contenders for the Liverpool hotseat, and out of those readily available, surely Capello has the most impressive CV – second to non at at club level – winning Serie A on 7 occasions with three different club’s (AC Milan, Roma – their first in 18 years, and Juventus – though these were later stripped in light of the Calciopoli scandal), La Liga twice (in two separate spells with Real Madrid) and the European Cup.

At 65 years old however, he is some 4 years older than Kenny Dalglish and would seemingly go against the initial criteria that FSG set, in wanting a ‘young and vibrant’ manager who is able to take the club forward for the foreseeable future.

Our new manager should be either Andre Villas-Boas or either Fabio Capello.
    1. I am fully confident that the Principal Owner John W. Henry and Chairman Thomas Werner will get it right and make the right call. The man that should replace Kenny Dalglish should not be other than Andre Villas-Boas; no Roberto Martinez, no Brendan Rodger. Andre-Villas Boas is a good manager and his footballing philosophy and style of play will fit LFC. He is one of the world’s most exciting young coaches and because he didn’t do it at Chelsea that doesn’t make him less good.
    2. On the other hand Fabio Capello has one of the most impressive winning titles record. He eventually became coach at Milan in 1991 and led them to domestic and continental glory with his crowning achievement the 1993-94 UEFA Champions League title, defeating Barcelona 4-0 in a memorable final. Leaving for a single season in charge of Real Madrid, in which he guided the club to the Spanish league title in 1997. In 1999 joined Roma. He won the 2001 Serie A title although that was to be as far as he could take them and he moved on from the debt-ridden club to Juventus in 2004. Juventus won the 2004-05 and 2005-06 Scudetto under Capello’s leadership. On a second spell at Real Madrid, Capello brought an end to Madrid’s long trophy drought with another title in 2007. Capello does things his own way or players face the highway. It is as simple as that. A winner who does not countenance failure. Capello employs an anchor-man in front of his defence as part of a midfield diamond. He switches between operating with a tall striker and fast partner, with a more expansive three-man frontline, boasting pace on the wings and power in the central area.

  • Fleetwood says:

Capello is being touted for the DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL role.
He is also to be involved with the Managers decision,to help advise FSG on who he thinks he can work with to help take the club forward?
    YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!

    • tony says:

With this set up the manager has no decision thats were the problem is getting a top notch manager.

    • Balfy says:

If this set up could be Capello and AVB then that would be ideal. AVB although many will believe everything they have heard about his poor man-management skills, would be the young protege and could learn from his new mentor and fellow strategist. This would eradicate the player power situation and both are rumored to rule with a strong business like approach. The young guy bonds with the players and then gets advice talking tactics and strategy from the master. If Capello had difficulty communicating his ideas to our British players (not known for tactical acumen) then AVB might well be able to translate that. Wow, that thought blows me away and if AVB is the ambitious coach that I have read about, he may well be up for learning from another great mentor at his young age, especially after the Chelsea debacle.
I am sold on this, if others were to stop being reactive and give this a serious thought then I think they would be to. Hope.

  • tony says:

I was not a fan off dalglish as manager butwhy the hell get rid off him for AVB . Have you found one person at chelsea that likes him and his age .
we complain about dalglish being a dinasoar and capello isnt what the F..k.
martenez fights relagation and the person who is the manager wont be pulling the shot with signings . they will put in place players director that has 100% control over the team.
How the hell the american owners sack manager with out replacing him for so long and let fans suffer.
75% of supporters said Rafa the owners dont give rats ass what the fans want they dont care that liverpool supporters work hard put there money up to buy tickets, who live die breath LFC.
the supporters have no voice have no opinion and who cares the yanks are saying. its total rubbish they way we LFC fans are treated buy owners

    • You heard says:

C’mon Tony…. please tell me what team owners have listened to the fans when it comes to an ownership decision? We do not own Liverpool FC, we simply love the club. If any owners listened to the fans then they have no business being an owner.

If owned a business, would you want people (who dont have any ownership) telling you how to run things? I think not.

Just calm down and support our beloved Reds no matter what. Just like we all have been doing…

The owners will get it right…. hopefully

      YNWA

    • Andrew says:

In answer to your 1st point I don’t know what your problem with that is. He tried to get rid of Drogba, Anelka, Lampard, maybe Cech as well and fell out with the despicable duo of Terry and cashley, he was told he had the owner’s backing and he found out different. Looking from the outside I agreed with him, where he fell down was he tried to do it very quickly instead of one by one but he will have learnt from that. He was a top manager a year ago but now he’s a dud? Come on that’s the territory of the gutter english press not Liverpool fans.

    • Joseph says:

Avb is a top class manager who wasnt gien !. The support of his players 2. Adequate time for his in my opinion a world class system to work and 3. The support from the fans. Im not arguing that rafa would be a good appointment but how many years does he have left in him before he ends up like daglish…playing with tacticts that went out with the cave men? Liverpool F.C needs stability and a long term plan which is why avb would fit the bill perfectly…we already went back to a past manager and it didnt work ( a manager who was ten times more succesful with liverpool than rafa was) so what makes you think it would work out again? Fans need to start looking to the future instead of the past. If youre so addiment that avb is a bad manager then maybe this article will change your mind….http://katecohensoccer.wordpress.com/2012/05/21/why-andre-villas-boas-will-be-a-success-at-liverpool%e2%80%8f/

      • Nic Cooper says:

I have no doubt AVB has excellent potential to succeed at Liverpool but he has stated that he needs time to make a decision which could mean a) he is not keen to have the pressure of making the top 4 with what he may perceive as a very average team and b) AS Roma are also interested, which may represent a more stable environment with slightly more reasonable expectations.

Going back to comparing Rafa and Daglish. Rafa was in top-level managment until just very recently. Daglish was out for over 10 years and his last success was league success was in 1995 with Blackburn. I’m not saying Kenny couldn’t turn it around. He probably could have improved on the league performances with 2 more seasons but to say that Rafa’s tactics are outdated just shows how much you know about him, which is very little.

Football at the end of the day is a simple game. We’ve heard that one before… Rafa is like a workaholic scientist when it comes to his tactics: zonal defence, zone pressing, 4-2-3-1, rotation, attacking full backs, defending wide MFs, free role play maker e.t.c. He will never be out dated. If anything he will analyse every opposition and come up with different, cutting edge strategies depending on which teams he plays. Whether the players can keep up is whole different matter.

One thing is for sure though we did overachieve with Rafa at the helm and for that we should all be grateful.

        • Joseph says:

before you start ranting maybe you should read my comment again i didnt say rafas tacticts are outdated i asked how long is it until they are hes not getting any younger. I wouldnt say he overachieved at liverpool, he made that team reach their full potential which is all any manager can do with the group of players he has, but what has he done since? Mess up what was a quality inter team? I never said i wasnt grateful for what he done the man brought us european success and nearly did it the second time, brought us the closest we have been to winning the league in a very long time, fa cup success, world club final etc etc and thats why in my opinion it will end up bad because like daglish he wont be able to live up to his first term at the helm especially not with the squad liverpool have at the moment…anyway none of this matters looks like were getting a manager who was fighting relegation 3 months ago

      • BILLYNWA says:

Rafael Benitez is a master tactician. Fact.

    • chri5jo says:

Sorry but if they bow down to the fans what kind of owners are they. Not all supporters want the same thing. I like rafa and thought he should be given more time but I don’t want him back. So who do you listen to?

    • Moocher says:

If we recall the fans shouts for Dalglish for manager.. look what that got us!. So I think shouting for Rafa isn’t the way forward either. I do think the owners care about LFC & supporters, and I think they do what’s best for club.

  • ray says:

I think Martinez will get it but Rafa will be offered D O F role for 12 months -both Spaniards – will work

  • stan howard says:

I think it’s a farce, a week before Daglish was sacked, the name of Martinez came from nowhere, as far as I can see only one Man has been or is being interviewed, if Matinez gets the job He had it before Kenny was sacked.

    • Andrew says:

I have to agree that someone at the club has been leaking and if Martinez who has done worse than fathead steve bruce at Wigan is chosen then the fans have been dragged through a pointless process

  • stan h says:

This one thing is certain, if they pick the wrong Man, He wont get the blame the Americans will. I can no longer stand the sight of John Henry,His behaviour at the FA Cup final presentation was disgusting. Ater belittling Daglish they will be cut very little slack. That said I hope we make the Champions League places, then all will be forgiven.

  • IGOCHE LFC says:

EIther capello or avb, i accept but not roberto m or r benitez return remember kk return oooo!!!!

    • Steve says:

What drivel. So you’re saying don’t go for Benitez because you should never go back – using Dalglish as an example, and in the same breath say you want Capello, who had TWO sucessful spells at Real Madrid, thus disproving your point!

      • Andrew says:

Good point Steve, I had genuine reservations when Kenny’s name was linked with the post in 2010 not because you never go back but because he had been out of football for a decade. Like it or not Rafa Benitez ticls the boxes most fans want ticked. Proven, knowledge of club and fans and has a genuine love for the club. He won’t get it because he doesn’t fit the FSG model and would not work with a director of football. Anyone linking Rafa with the director of football job is daft as Rafa wants to manage

        • Jason says:

I wish people would stop pedalling this Rafa won’t work with a DoF C**P…

          You haven’t got a clue!

Any real professional in any field will have issues with someone above them if they are not doing their job properly.

He was LIED TO at inter, he was LIED to by the cowboys and FYI he’s Spanish, you know, the country where Sporting/Technical Directors are everywhere!

He’s a hard working, super intelligent guy and when he’s around, it will be easy to see who the triggers are in your company. With that sort of bs you could easily walk into a london press job.

  • kaysayi says:

BRING RAFA BACK, END OF, WE DON’T WANT GAFFERS THAT WILL BE CHUMMY CHUMMY WITH FERGIE…. THAT JUST ISN’T THE LIVERPOOL WAY

  • KFC says:

Would be very happy with capello as boss, you can’t fire kenny and appoint a no mark. Something capello is clearly not, he woul do a great job at anfield!

  • stan h says:

Rafa is the man, the Americans wont pick him, just like , Hicks, Gillett and Hodgson, they have no idea of what liverpool are about, they have shown that by admitting Daglish would have gone even if we had won two trophies.if they pick someone who does not immediately get it, like Rafa or even Houlier, they wont last long Liverpool dont need them – anyone will buy into our Worldwide brand.

    • You heard says:

And if Rafa comes in and doesnt get the job done then then same people who wanted him in charge will write, i cant believe they ( the owners) gave him another chance.

Its a double edge sword. We all want the same thing epl title and europe but what i want more is some f*cking consistent football. Stop playing down to the smaller teams, stop losing sooooo many home games.

this year was such a roller coaster so happy the nightmare is overall. New season, new beginning…. Cant wait

      • Nic Cooper says:

Rafa didn’t let us down in that dept. He made Anfield “Fortress Anflield” and a force in Europe
only for the non-footballing idiots to decide he had to go. And for what??? One bad season finishing in 7th after 3 transfer windows with a paltry 2-3 million for a year and half??

We were on the verge of administration after the previous American owners. So what do we do next….?? Sell out to another American owner who is making a mockery of our traditions, publically humiliating our King and proceeding to interview a merry go round of managers that are embarassing to say, rejecting us.

  • Jack says:

People! People! This is pure and utter speculation! The media are throwing about different names every 5 minuted and this is a real indicator that they simply haven’t a clue!!! Liverpool supporters of all supporters should see through this bullsh*t with our past experience of them and stop reacting to it.

    • Nic Cooper says:

I’m sorry to say a number of managers are in fact rejecting to have an interview with us. This is not speculation. It is ongoing.

Back when things were done behind closed doors (the way it should be)we were revealing new managers as soon as the previous one was terminated. Now we are having to endure this publically humiliating and embarassing, public hiring process from manager to DOF.

Shankly will be rolling in his grave!!

  • Sal says:

Tough one to call no doubt but board really has to go for proven track record of Domestic league & Euros (CL or Uefa) & with those factors in mind only a few names spring to mind. Capello, Louis Van Gaal & Rafa Benitez with Benitez being the popular choice. AVB is a higher risk than the ones above but on merit probably a better choice than Martinez. Remember AVB was just not given enoough time by Chelsea and in the PL you do need at least one season. CL would be a minimum for any of the above & so not sure who could best handle that expectation & pressure the best – Maybe Capello on a 2yr deal or Rafa who knows most of the team, backroom & with the full backing where he needs to spend.

    • Nic Cooper says:

Capello will only agree to do it to earn his final pay out no matter what the result. At 65 years of age he won’t be a long term solution.

Capello much like Mourinho and Guardiola have only managed mostly the elite teams that don’t need much tweaking to have a crack at the title.
We saw Capello struggle with an avg England team in the World Cup. With the right resources he will have the experience to get it right but not when we are so far behind our rivals.

Rafa has experience overachieving with Valencia and Liverpool or the so called 2nd tier teams (not by name or prestige but by league performances) up against financially stronger rival teams of late. These past seasons Liverpool have unquestionably dropped even further off the chase in the League and to try and get 4th will be a gargantuan task even the World’s most elite managers will need more than a season to rectify.
We need constant spending, wheeling and dealing to stay competitive.

I think many don’t want to come after the way Kenny was unceremoniously sacked by the owners and the unrealistic target of 4th weighing over their shoulders while the top 4 contenders will also be strengthening. They will be setting themselves up for failure. Only Martinez who will want to improve his CV with a big Club, Capello (to increase his pension money) and Rafa who is out of a job, living in Liverpool, loves Liverpool and has nothing to lose will take this job.

Anybody else will be out of their mind!

      • Sal says:

Fair point but whose to say a younger aged manager is guaranteed to be long term & successful? If we look at some of the other top PL clubs – Arsenal, Manu, Spurs they all have managers who are 60+.

Now i’m not saying yes it should only be Capello but his track record is top notch and he has managed at 4 clubs in Italy and won the Scudetto with each and twice in Spain with Real. Flipside is though he will not be cheap and on balance Rafa or AVB should be the preferred option to Capello less risk.

Fact is though with all the top clubs now it is purely down to results and whose to say Arsenal & Manu the same could not happen there if they were to not qualify for CL for a couple of seasons or sequence of bad results.

FSG really need to get the positions at the board level in place + new staduim plans ASAP and only then can it start to look appealing for the potential managers to look at the strategy/vision, budget for the future.

  • RedMike888 says:

The new management team will be Capello as Director of Football and Martinez as manager. You heard it first here!

  • Badkop n serious says:

Rafa this Rafa that. Can’t we just move on, the results have not been going our way but at times last season our football was simply delightful… Under Rafa we will go back to that boring, defensive, scared to loose football.. ( yippee, I so need that in my life).
Just give the job to AVB or Martinez so that we can start preparing for next season.

    • Nic Cooper says:

Show some respect for a manager that actually got us back to where we should be. Dispicable!!

  • Gavin says:

What is the fasciation about Rafa Benitez ????? Yes, he had some success at LFC but can we put hime to the pages of History and move on to a new manager, with fresh Ideas….Under Benitez we played defensive negative football, Lets move forward and get this world class football club back to where it belongs….Lets stop looking at mediocre managers and start aiming for the best…..We are LFC…..Pep Guardiola for me please…..

    • Nic Cooper says:

So Pep can magically wave his wand and get us playing like Barcelona. Go back to playing Championship manager.

    • leroy says:

we played defensive football under him and hit Real Madrid with four unreplied goals?! We did the same and hit Manure at home with four goals too. Are you a Liverpool fan with your beer-laced drivel? Shocking stuff coming from you man.

  • justin says:

Why is AVB so good. Porto done awsome but he is tottally unproven in another job. I dont understand?

  • justin says:

    Same with Pep Guardiola?

  • Livmad says:

No to Rafa…he had his time. Go for Capello…he’ll do ‘The Italian Job’ for us.

    • Nic Cooper says:

      OR an England job!!
These managers we are fantasizing over may have good records at Clubs that are almost guaranteed to be top 3 in their respective leagues but getting Liverpool out of this mire and into 4th (where competition is even more fierce than it ever has been) will be one of the most difficult tasks.

      • Moocher says:

Yes that where we’re at right now. The team deserves to be where it is as the performances were simply not good enough. We expect too much from a manager & maybe the players need to take a good look at themselves no matter who the manager is. With a better attitude maybe just maybe will get the results.

  • tony keegan says:

capello for new manager with jamie carragher as a coach /assistant to take over at end of capellos contract

    • Jason says:

carragher? that is the dumbest idea in the world. he’d be another souness. you do realise that the so called “leadership” of the back 4 is a load of tosh, he annoys the f* out of alot a people and just plain gets on their nerves… he stabbed his own manager in the back and wouldn’t speak up for the club when it was getting ravaged by H&G and as soon as Rafa was forced out, lined his own pockets with a deadly contract knowing full well that he’s at the end of the road. the spanish boys stood up for the club while stevie me and carra kept shtum. i wouldn’t be surprised if torres left because of carragher and gerrard’s cowardice.

      • Sib says:

Jason, well said….. Stevie and Jamie should be disgusted with themselves for the way they sided with purslow!

  • adelany says:

pls pls pls my fellow fans let the owner make a decision so that we can have chance to justify them.we cry for dalglish later we ask him to leave for administration post that means the owner should sack him as a coach good work FSG,now benitez again what if he fail what next?for me if owner said martinez suit the cartaria then go for him and let move on.
