LIVERPOOL Football Club’s Spanish under-19 starlet, Suso, is keen to push for a place in the first team for the 2012/13 Premier League season. The young forward is keen to help Brendan Rodgers implement the “Tiki-Taka” style, made famous by Spain, at Anfield over the coming months.

Rodgers’s Swansea City side stunned and entertained Premier League audiences last season with their Barcelona-esque brand of football, short, intricate passing, domination of possession and confidence on the ball, and Suso has revealed that he too is very pleased with the new boss’s philosophy.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com Suso explained:

“I have had my first training session with the new manager, he has been talking to me all of the time and, being honest with you, he looks really good. The football he wants us to play is the style of play I like.

“It’s really good for me so we hope we will get better. The manager has been talking to me about the style of football he wants us to play and to use the ball as much as we can. He told me I need to work hard for the team and do my best.

“He did well with that style when he was at Swansea. This is a new look team and we will try to do the best we possibly can.

“I’m trying to work as hard as I can every day so I can be in the first team. I would love to be able to get some games in the Barclays Premier League but I know to do that I need to work hard every day and show the boss what I can do.

“I hope to get some minutes with the first team in the friendly matches out here. As I say I just want to improve in every game and every training session because we are going to face some really good teams. I just need to learn in every game.”

Suso only joined up with the rest of the Liverpool squad in Boston on Wednesday, after starring for Spain in the European U-19 Championships, a competition in which the Spanish youngsters replicated the achievement of their senior squad, winning the tournament after defeating Greece 1-0 in the final.

Enthused with confidence from his exploits with the U-19s and arriving back at Liverpool having gained crucial tournament experience, the youngster believes that his time away will help him become a better player for the Reds in the future.

“It was a really good feeling,” said Suso. “I knew we had a strong team and there were some really good teams in the tournament. I thought we did really well and to win the tournament was special.

“The feeling is really good and I am happy because you don’t win the European Championships every day. It was really difficult to win it because we had some tough games but finally we did it.

“I’ve been improving a lot since I left Liverpool at the end of last season. Playing for Spain at the Euros I was playing against some of the best players in Europe so I would say yes I think I do come back a better player.

“To make a competitive appearance for Liverpool would be a really good experience for me. I didn’t get the chance last season and I was a little bit sad, but this year we have a new coach and it’s a new season, so I hope I can get that chance.”

These are the kind of words that many Liverpool fans will be delighted to hear, as they have great belief in Suso’s potential to break into the first team in the coming years.

I think Suso could save us a huge packet if we use him properly. He has the ability, without doubt, to become a very large part of how we play. I can only hope that Rodgers has him in his future plans.

Tbh this guy would be in my team any day ahead of the likes of Spearing. I reckon he’d probably give Henderson a run for his money too. It will be interesting to see if Rodgers sticks to his “if your good enough your old enough” mantra because some of our youngsters are better than what we already have.

People tend to think tikka takka style belongs to spain, pass and move or posession football was invented by bill shankly and then paisley and dalglish. In his first reign as Liverpool manager, have a look at the videos of the great Liverpool teams and this will prove my point, it was in Europe in the early years Liverpool played slow posession football to keep the crowd quiet and also give them a chance in the home leg when they would speed up the passing and move forward in numbers ,

I think you will find it comes from Ajax and Holland the idea of possession and pass and move football taught from a young age! The 5-1 hammering in 1966 when Shanks saw the importance of holding onto the ball.Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff who played in that game took it to Barcelona and set up the La Masia Barcelona’s youth academy.

I know, it’s like people who think that 10 men behind the ball and desperate defending began with Chelsea last season. I touch on the origins of tiki-taka clear in my opinion piece on Rodgers, his philosophy and pre-season due to be published soon and both Liverpool and Ajax of the 70s feature.
